Jean Michel Basquiat:
Overall, I have felt that Jean Michel Basquiat has been an influence on my work during the decades project because of his interpretation of the social issues and the way he focuses upon opinions. This has inspired me to look into music lyrics from artists at the time to uncover the stories behind them; I also like the way he presents his imagery- it is of an abstract nature with a obvious message.
Non-Traditional:
I experimented using a combination of mediums together to create different effects in order to present social unrest in the style of Jean Michel Basquiat. I feel that I have connected with Basquiat's style because I was trying to communicate the same message about society that he has in his epigrams and murals.
I used mixed media to show the unrest that society creates and felt that my imagery took on an expression; some of the imagery caused the viewer to feel queasy- I feel that I have achieved the message I wanted to communicate because of the strong discomfort in the image and that on reflection I have presented unrest effectively in a literal manner.
To present my imagery, I used text to show my own opinion on the social unrest which I was influenced by Basquiat, in order to make my work personal. overall, my imagery shows the way in which culture suffered under the hands of society.
